Refer a patient to St Margaret of Scotland Hospice
We accept referrals for specialist palliative care, complex clinical and nursing care, community palliative care, and our Day Hospice. This page provides everything you need to make a referral quickly and accurately.
Who can make a referral?
Referrals are accepted from the following healthcare professionals.

Primary care services
- General Practitioners (GPs)
- Advanced Nurse Practitioners
- Community Nurses
Referral criteria
To be eligible for referral, the following criteria must be met.
• The patient has consented to the referral
• The patient has an advanced life-limiting illness with complex symptoms, or complex emotional, social, or spiritual needs requiring the input of the specialist multi-professional team
Patients may be admitted for:
• Symptom assessment and management
• Palliative rehabilitation
• End of life care
How to refer
There are two referral pathways depending on the service required.

Specialist Palliative Care
St Joseph's Ward, Community Palliative Care & Day Hospice
For patients with advanced life-limiting illness requiring specialist palliative care — in-patient, community, or Day Hospice.

For patients with complex medical and nursing needs, referred by NHSGGC South Sector Medicine for the Elderly Consultants.

Out of hours advice and support
Our advice and support service is available 24/7 for healthcare professionals. A referral form is not required for out-of-hours clinical advice, simply call 0141 952 1141.
