Since our doors opened in 1950, it's been a privilege to be a part of the patients' journey.
History of the HospiceOur Care
Our approach to providing care is holistic, taking into account the spiritual, physical, psychological and social needs of patients.
In-Patient Care
The Hospice provides two units for in-patient care:
- Specialist Palliative Care – St Joseph’s Ward
- Hospital-Based Complex Clinical Care – Mary Aikenhead Centre
These units provide care for patients with advanced life-limiting conditions requiring assessment and management of complex symptoms. In addition, patients may require support for complex emotional, social and spiritual needs.
To meet these needs, patients will require the input of the specialist multi-professional team.
Patients may be referred to our Hospice following the criteria available in Referral Guidance.

Pastoral Care
Our team is always available to offer spiritual care, support and counselling of various kinds, whenever it may be required.
24/7 Telephone Support and Advice
Available to all who may need advice and support – for patients, relatives and professionals
Community-based Palliative Care
Our team is available to offer Specialist advice and support, complementing the care of the patient’s own doctor and other health professionals
Out-Patient Service
Access to Specialist Palliative Care support and advice as well as a range of services provided by our multi-disciplinary team.
